Patriot Softball On a Roll; 7-1 On the Week

The University of the Cumberlands softball team had an action packed week as they competed in eight Mid-South Conference (MSC) games. The Patriots refused to be knocked down as they defeated Saint Catharine and Pikeville College and out of a four-game match up against West Virginia Tech, the Patriots were able to pull away with three wins leaving them with a 12-4 overall record while coming away with a 8-2 MSC standing.

On the 12th, the Patriots annihilated Saint Catharine College in both games (10-1, 10-0). In game one, Cumberlands scored an impressive six runs in the bottom of the first. They added to that as they scored two more in the third and fourth inning while allowing only one run for Saint Catharine. Saint Catharine couldn’t fight back and the Patriots took the game by run-rule in five innings as they tallied 15 hits. Senior Fahlin Pulliam (Hawesville, KY) led the team as she went 3-3 with 2 runs and an impressive 6 RBIs – one from a solo homerun. Freshman Erica Meguiar (Russellville, KY) also went 3-3 and junior Ashley Wampler (London, KY) went 2-2. Pitcher, senior Mindy Breitholle (Fairfield, OH) had an impressive 7 strikeouts in the short, five-inning game.

Game two against Saint Catharine proved to be as immaculate as the first as the Cumberlands scored two runs in the first, four in the second, and another four in the fourth, once again run-ruling Saint Catharine. The Patriots had a total of 12 hits in the game with freshman Tabitha Benson (Cookeville, TN) going 2-3 with 2 RBIs – one of which being a homerun. Freshman Brittny Lovelace (Middletown, OH) assisted with the win with 3 RBIs and a stand-up double. Junior Hollie Byrum (Franklin, OH) went 2-2 with an RBI.

On Tuesday, Cumberlands took on the Pikeville College Bears on the road. The Patriots had enough grit to pack away two more big conference wins. In game one, the Patriots were the first to score in the third and pushed another run across in the fourth, finishing off with two more in the sixth. The Patriots had eight hits and took the 4-0 win. Benson once again came through with her bat tallying 3 RBIs. Pulliam was credited with the other RBI that assisted in the Patriots win. Breitholle was sensational on the mound as she put 8 Bears in the book with strikeouts.

In game two, the Patriots were once again the first to score, as they pushed across three runs in the third. The Bears were given the opportunity to score in the sixth taking four runs. Down a run, the Patriots didn’t fall to the pressure as they scored another four runs in the seventh. Cumberlands held off the Bears in the bottom of the seventh and earned yet another conference win, 7-4. Lovelace had 2 RBIs along with another stand-up double; Wampler and Benson earned doubles for themselves, giving the Patriots a total of 15 hits.

After a day of rest and a long road trip, the Patriots took on the Golden Bears of West Virginia Tech. On Friday, the Patriots had their first match-up against the Golden Bears and the game was scoreless until WV Tech was able to push across 3 runs in the sixth. Pulliam tried to get a spark going in the seventh with a solo homerun. Breitholle had a miraculous game with an impressive 11 strikeouts. She attempted to help herself on the offensive end as well going 2-3 with a stand-up double; however, it just wasn’t enough for the Patriots as they took the loss, 1-3.

The first game helped the Patriots get their minds right so that game two would be a remarkably different story. The Patriots were the first to score as they pushed across 5 runs in the second inning and scored for the next 3 innings. Cumberlands only allowed one Golden Bear run to cross the plate, ending the game with a 10-1 win. The Patriots had an exceptional 13 hits with Meguiar notching 3 RBIs and a double and both Benson and senior Michelle Breen (Springboro, OH) had 2 RBIs. Along with Meguiar were Benson and Byrum who also hit doubles.

On Saturday, the Patriots played two more games against the Golden Bears. In their third matchup, Cumberlands got on the board first as they pushed across a run and it was a rally after that as they scored 5 runs in the third, 1 in the fourth, 5 in the fifth, and an additional 7 in the sixth as the Patriots carved a big “W” into their season. The game ended with a final score of 19-6 in six innings. Lovelace went 5-6 in the game. Breitholle would be the DP for the game. She went 5-5 with a total of 5 RBI’s. Byrum, Meguiar, and Benson were once again the double-hitters for game three as the Patriots had a sensational 24 hits. Sophomore Carrie Cobb (London, KY) was on the mound and put down six “K’s” in the book to assist in the Patriot win.

After a very solid win in game three, the Patriots were itching for another win for the season. They came out and scored first in the first inning, had an additional run in the fourth, and added 2 more in the fifth. The Golden Bears were able to push one run across in the sixth with a homerun, but this spark wasn’t enough to battle the scorching flame the Patriots had and the game ended in yet another Patriot win with a final score of 4-1. Sophomore Angela Steuer (Miamisburg, OH) took the mound and had a total of six strikeouts in the six innings she pitched. Breitholle came in for relief in the seventh and packed away three more strikeouts. Junior Courtney Delk (Jamestown, TN) had a double and paired that with 2 RBIs for the game. Byrum hit yet another double and recorded an RBI.

The Patriots will continue their conference season on Tuesday, March 23 as they host their rivals from Georgetown College. Game time is at 3:00 and 5:00 pm.
